Zune and ipod dilemma. can anyone help?

Ok so I lost my ipod a few days ago and may perhaps be in need of a new portable music player.

Unfortunately, i was in the process of trying to transfer music from the ipod to itunes. so i lost about 600 of my songs (as there are some songs not on the HDD or on a disc). Would there be a way to re-download my purchases (because most–if not all–of wat i lost were purchased items)?

A second option i have considered is getting a zune. it would be cheaper than buying a new ipod (especially if i had to purchase all those songs), not to mention i like zune's download all you want for 15 a month (does this apply to movies as well?). talking to my dad, he mentioned that zune protects all of its music, and wont let you play music if not hooked up to the internet (as apparently it requires to be fed by the internet datatbase), and in addition, when the zune account is cancelled, ALL the downloaded music is lost and cant be played.

can anyone shed light on this?

setting aside that practically nothing is compatible with the zune, does anyone recommend getting the zune over the ipod, knowing my situation?

thanks
